It was a busy evening for the Humboldt Fire Department during their open house on Oct. 10 for Fire Prevention Week.
"It really went well," said fire chief, Mike Kwasnica. "We had around 75 people show up, both kids and adults."
The open house was held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. to promote awareness for this year's theme of kitchen safety for Fire Prevention Week. The goal was to educate parents and children about the potential and common hazards that occur while in the kitchen.
"We had a kitchen demonstration," said Kwasnica, "We a had a burning pot and showed people how to put the fire out with a lid."
According to Kwasnica, there were a lot more kids who came than originally expected. Some of them were boy scouts who were there to get their fire safety badges.
"We taught them about fire safety and our extrication tools," said Kwasnica. "We showed them tools like the Jaws of Life and what we have to work with."
The open house was held at the fire hall and the ladder truck was out front so that the place was easily recognized. Not including Kwasnica and the deputy fire chief, Darrell Wickenhauser, there were also about 11 other volunteer fire fighters there helping out.
"It was a really good turnout for (the volunteers)," said Kwasnica. "I was surprised and pleased. They didn't have to come, they just showed up when they were free and had time."
They had donuts and coffee for adults and face painting for the kids. They also had door prizes, such as Sparky smoke alarms, toques, and coffee mugs.
