Operation Red Nose is once again launched for in the Battlefords.
This is the fifth year for Operation Red Nose in the Battlefords. The area was the first one in the province to launch the initiative, in which Christmas revelers and their vehicles are driven safely home by volunteers.
Since launching in the Battlefords in 2009 the initiative has spread to other regions of the province, including Prince Albert and Saskatoon. This year Operation Red Nose expands to Regina.
Nationally, this is the 30th year for Operation Red Nose, which is set up in over 100 communities in six provinces.
The local effort has grown over the past five years, with last year being especially busy. Bill Bowman of North Battleford Lions said they had five teams on weekends and eight teams on New Year's Eve.
The teams consist of a volunteer who drives the client and their vehicle home, as well as a second volunteer who will pick up the volunteer after the client is dropped off.
North Battleford Lions Club is again hosting the local effort and actively seeking volunteers.
SGI is again partnering as a sponsor, promoting the message that Operation Red Nose as an alternative to drinking and driving.
The effort also operates as a fundraiser for youth amateur sports in the community. This year all money raised with go to the local KidSport charity. KidSport provides grants to remove financial barriers for children looking to register in sports.
Last year's efforts raised a total of $7,200 that went to Battlefords Boys and Girls Club for their youth sports efforts.
The dates in which Operation Red Nose will operate in the Battlefords are Nov. 29 and 30, and Dec. 6, 7, 13,14, 20, 21 and 31.
