A Maidstone Pasture Poodle Roundup was hosted Feb. 25.
Dustin Hollingshead and Shae Kalmakoff and many other volunteers organized the event. The weather was storming and most self-respecting coyotes were hunkered down, but the event went ahead.
There was a $50 entry fee and all proceeds went back into the pot. There was a first prize for the largest coyote of 50 per cent of the pot. Second prize was for the most pounds of coyotes for 30 per cent of the pot. There was a third prize for the closest to the secret weight for 20 per cent of the pot. The secret weight was provided by Hollingshead's mother the day before and was in a sealed envelope not opened until the weigh in.
Twenty teams took part and, in spite of the inclement weather, 34 coyotes were brought in.
Darren Eggeson from Maidstone and a father and son team from Unity, Stewart and Ryan DeRoo split the prize for largest coyote. They both had a coyote weighing 38.5 pounds.
The DeRoo team also won the most pounds of coyotes, as they bagged nine. The DeRoom team also had the coyote closest to the secret weight. They went home with $950 in prize money.
There were many door prizes and organizes sold out of chili.
The next day, Ron Lacey from North Battleford bought all the coyote carcasses. The proceeds will help fund next year's event and hopefully start a gun club and shooting range in the future.
