The Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corporation (SSTC) wants you to bring your old scrap tires to be recycled. RMs around the province are running their own collection program, and Humboldt’s collection point is the Humboldt Vintage Club, which will receive a donation for the club per tire from the SSTC.
“It gets rid of scrap materials,” said Craig Poncelet with the Humboldt Vintage Club. “It’s a good way of cleaning up the area and the environment.”
Humboldt’s program runs from June 29 to July 19, though people have started bringing in their tires; Poncelet estimates there are close to 200 being held at the Vintage Club. There are signs put up to direct people to the dropoff point.
There are no restrictions on the type of tire except that they cannot have any rims.
Though each RM has its own program, Poncelet notes that if someone from another RM for any reason wants to bring tires to Humboldt, it doesn’t affect anything.
Poncelet doesn’t have an estimate for how many tires they’re expecting, but he says it will be a high number considering the tires they have before the program has even officially started.
When it comes to a close, the SSTC will take the tires at no cost. This is a one-time program and outside of collection times, SSTC does not pick up tires for free.
This year, 157 RMs have been cleaned up of scrap tires, and over 370,000 tires have been collected and sent for recycling.
