The city of North Battleford got some good news about the costs of installing a Liberty Swing at the natural spaces playground in Centennial Park.

This is the project by Battlefords Early Childhood Intervention Program to install a swing at the playground for use by those with wheelchairs. BECIP had been looking at approaching the city about assisting with funding for the installation. BECIP reported last month they were looking at an installation cost of between $25,000 and $40,000.

At council Monday, director of parks and recreation Cheryl DeNeire reported Monday that plans have changed.

DeNeire reported that their parks and arena manager Gord Whitton has stepped in as project manager, and has been able to reduce the quote for the full installation down to $20,000. That includes an in-kind contribution by city staff of $2,500.

As a result, DeNeire reports the city has received confirmation from the BECIP board that they will cover the cost of the installation themselves. Parks staff will prepare the site before it is handed over to the contractor, and Whitton will stay on as project manager until the swing is fully installed.

Once installed, the new swing will be inspected monthly for compliance with Canadian playground standards and maintained as needed, said DeNeire.
