HUMBOLDT — An effort to build a playground and pickleball court in Water Ridge Park received a $90,000 boost.

The project received the donation from the Federated Co-operatives Limited’s Co-op Community Spaces program. This year, 15 community projects across Western Canada received a total of $1 million.

“It’s an honor. We were super excited as a committee when we got the news about the grant coming in,” said Breanna Landry, the president of the Water Ridge Playground Committee.

The donation means  fundraising for the project is done and will be completed this year.

Landry said the committee found out about the donation a few months ago, but had to keep it on the down-low.

“We already had our equipment ordered and everything. The [playground] project will start in July. We’ll start doing all the prep and getting the equipment here and the play structure. Then we will get the finishing touches on it by the end of August.”

Brent Walker, the general manager of the Humboldt Co-op, said it was awesome to see this donation happen.

“It is awesome to see another nice playground being built in Humboldt, adding it will  add to the area, which already has a spray park and walking trails.”

The winners are chosen by a committee made up of FCL members.

The original goal of the project was $150,000. The City of Humboldt committed to match up to $75,000. Landry said the fundraising campaign raised $200,000. The extra money will go toward the play structure and adding a rubber surface around the playground. Kal-Tire has committed $10,000 towards the rubber.

“The community is super excited to have this coming here,” Landry said.

“This is a park that’s used by the community the surrounding towns, and it’s going to be a park that people are going to want to come to in Humboldt, with the water park here plus the pickleball court and now the play structure.

Landry said many locals have reach out about the project and  are looking forward to the play structure.

“I just want to thank everybody that’s contributed to this project and that have reached out for help. We’re so thankful for all of it, and we can’t wait for everybody to come to the park and check it out this summer.”
