Preliminary inquiry dates have been set this week in North Battleford provincial court in the murder case of Nicholas Giroux.

The preliminary inquiry for Giroux, who was charged with second-degree murder following the stabbing death of Thang Sian Mang, 20, on Sept. 30 at a North Battleford hotel, is to be held April 23 and 24.

That stabbing death capped a string of high-profile incidents in August and September that shocked residents of the Battlefords, prompting several public meetings and news headlines.

Giroux appeared by closed circuit TV before Judge David Kaiser in North Battleford provincial court Wednesday morning.

For the purposes of setting the preliminary dates, an election was made of Queen's Bench judge alone, but it was indicated that could still be changed to judge and jury if the defence so chooses.

Giroux remains in custody at Saskatoon Correctional Centre.
