Preliminary hearing set for accused of shooting on Island Lake First Nation

The bullet shot at the home injured a man

MEADOW LAKE – A preliminary hearing has been set for one of four people accused of a shooting on Island Lake First Nation.

The hearing for 22-year-old Andrew Opikokew from Mudie Lake First Nation is scheduled to start Aug. 18 in Loon Lake circuit court to determine if there is enough evidence for him to stand trial.

Opikokew, along with Kashtin Lee Sandfly, Kirk Crookedneck, and Harold Mitsuing Jr., were charged following an incident Dec. 21, 2021, where a shot was fired at a home on Island Lake First Nation, which injured a man inside. The injured man was found by police about four hours later in a vehicle on a remote heavily snowed road. Police transported him to a main road for medical attention.

Opikokew, Mitsuing, and Sandfly were charged with discharging a firearm while being reckless, and being an occupant of a vehicle with a firearm. Crookedneck was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and discharging a firearm while being reckless.

Sandfly had an appearance in Lloydminster court April 6 on an additional charge of possession of property over $5,000 obtained by crime. That charge was waived to Meadow Lake Provincial Court to be included with his charges in Loon Lake circuit court.
