Amid glowing reports about the Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre come concerns about privacy in the facility's change rooms.

The issue was raised at Monday's council meeting by Councillor Grace Lang. She said she heard from a school teacher who had concerns about the open change rooms at the facility, particularly when school-aged kids were brought in to use the pool.

"You're expected to all change together, even though that's a very uncomfortable situation," said Lang.

She asked if the open change rooms were always planned to be that way. Parks and Recreation Director Keith Anderson responded that they were "designed like that from the word go."

He suggested options for those who wanted more privacy such as the more private "family change room," or also the cubicles in the washrooms.

Lang noted the change rooms at the Harry Bailey and George Ward swimming pools in Saskatoon were designed the same way, but she also said "our society has changed quite a bit since then."

"Lots of kids have cell phones that take pictures," said Lang, who noted there were fears that photos from change rooms might end up posted on social media sites. "We might find that to be a problem going forward."

Mayor Ian Hamilton responded administration would be made aware of the concerns. Besides that, Lang made a point of noting the many positive comments the aquatic centre has otherwise received from the public.
