Provincial Green Party leader quits

With just a month before the writ is dropped on the 2011 provincial election, the provincial Green Party has been thrown into leadership turmoil.

Party leader Larissa Shasko, who had been slated to run in Moose Jaw North in the coming election, suddenly resigned as Green Party leader Tuesday. What's more, it appears she has quit the party entirely to support the NDP.

According to reports, Shasko has signed on to work for NDP candidate Yens Pedersen's campaign in Regina South.

Pedersen, who grew up in the Cut Knife area, is running against Saskatchewan Party incumbent Bill Hutchinson in that riding.

Shasko had led the provincial Greens since April, 2009 and has also been a frequent candidate for the party at the provincial and federal level. Her most recent run was the federal election campaign in the riding of Palliser in the spring of this year.

Now the question for the Green Party is who will lead the party into the coming election campaign. The provincial election is November 7.

The Greens had in place approximately 35 candidates in advance of the provincial election, including candidates Owen Swiderski in the Battlefords, Vinessa Currie in Cut Knife-Turtleford, Norbert Kratchmer in Kindersley and Meggan Hougham in Lloydminster.
