Provincial parks open for 2018, fire bans in effect

With the calendars nearing the end of May and Canadians celebrating Victoria Day, the Government of Saskatchewan announced the official opening of provincial parks effective May 17.

With the calendars nearing the end of May and Canadians celebrating Victoria Day, the Government of Saskatchewan announced the official opening of provincial parks effective May 17.

There will be plenty for campers to do this summer, says the release including Learn to Camp, Learn to Fish, and interpretive activites.

Campers are reminded that the government has issued a near province-wide burn ban, and warn campers to keep fires small attended to at all times.

With conditions dry across much of the Province of Saskatchewan, the government has issued a ban on all open fires.

The ban stretches from south of the Churchill River to the United States border and has been effective since May 14.

The ban applies to all provincial crown land, burn notification areas, provincial parks and recreational sites within the ban area, says a press release sent out by the government.

“This includes Clearwater River and Lac La Ronge provincial parks, but excludes Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, where fire hazards are lower.”

Conditions across the province have been quite dry this spring, including locally where Humboldt received just 8.5mm of precipitation in the month of April, according to Environment Canada.

“No open fires or fireworks are permitted for the duration of the ban.  Self-contained heating devices, pressurized stoves, gas barbecues, propane firepits, or charcoal briquettes used in an approved firebox will be permitted for cooking and heating purposes during the ban,” says the release.

The ban is in effect until the Ministry of Environment rescinds the order says the release, which encourages those traveling somewhere to check if the burning restrictions apply to that area before leaving.

“Municipalities, regional and national parks may also ban open burning in their areas of responsibility. “

Fire ban information and a list of municipal fire bans is available at www.saskatchewan.ca/residents/environment-public-health-and-safety/wildfire-in-saskatchewan/fire-bans.”
