The public works department in North Battleford had a couple of announcements for the public at Monday's council meeting.

The first announcement was to do with the street sweeping program, which is now fully underway.

The street sweepers have been out and will continue to be out this week, said Schafer, who "asks the general public to be alert."

Also, he announced the unidirectional flushing program will begin next week, affecting the west side of the city. The goal is to make sure the maintenance of the water is at optimal levels and to properly maintain the city's water distribution lines.

"Flushing is a process by which water is moved through the lines at a high velocity so a scouring action is created," Schafer said in a news release Tuesday.

"Water is then discharged, removing any material build up from the pipe. Material removed from the lines through the flushing process is harmless and requires no special treatment."

The flushing will start at 8 p.m. and go to 8 a.m. the next day and affects various blocks on the city's west side. The flushing runs from April 30 to May 17. Signs will be placed on affected blocks prior to the beginning of the flushing.
