A young offender has been charged in connection to theft of a motor vehicle reported stolen in the Maidstone area.

Just after midnight May 3, an RCMP member from the Maidstone detachment found himself in pursuit of a pickup truck on Highway 16 westbound to Lloydminster. According to police, the RCMP had been investigating a reported stolen vehicle from the Maidstone area. The driver of the truck reported stolen also matched the description of a person suspected in a stabbing in North Battleford earlier that day, however it was later learned the driver was not involved in that incident.

Members terminated the pursuit when speeds became excessive. However, other members in the direction of travel of the stolen truck set up a spike belt along Highway 16 near Lloydminster. There was very little traffic, and the spike belt was deployed, puncturing four tires on the suspected stolen vehicle.

The vehicle continued for another kilometer before coming to a stop, at which time the suspect fled on foot before being located and arrested a short time later.

The individual was held in custody and his first court appearance was scheduled for Lloydminster May 5. His name cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He is charged with theft of a vehicle over $5,000, possession of property over $5,000, flight from police, dangerous driving, mischief over $5,000, resisting arrest, obstruction, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, breach of a conditional sentence order and break and enter.
