North Battleford's former fire chief received a prestigious honour at City Hall Monday.

Pat MacIsaac is the recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. It was presented to him at the start of Monday night's city council meeting by Mayor Ian Hamilton.

MacIsaac was nominated for the award by the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association. It is in recognition of his efforts working and training volunteer firefighters over his career.

Looking on from the gallery was MacIsaac's wife Beverly.

"It's quite the honour. I'm humbled, proud," said MacIsaac to reporters after the meeting.

"It's nice to be recognized by peers, nice to be recognized by the profession."

MacIsaac's career in firefighting goes back some 20 years in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Until a couple of months ago, MacIsaac was fire chief for North Battleford Fire and Emergency Services, a position he held for four years.

MacIsaac has since accepted a position as deputy fire chief with the City of Okotoks, just south of Calgary.

Following the meeting, Mayor Hamilton paid tribute to the work of the former North Battleford fire chief, particularly during the recent flood and wind storm events in the city as well as his contribution towards emergency preparedness plans.

"He's managed a number of significant events in our community and he's also contributed a lot in development, for sure," said Hamilton.

"Obviously that's recognized across the country in that it was the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association that recognized him for this award."
