RCMP remains vigilant in wake of Edmonton attack

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Saskatchewan say they will be vigilant in the wake of a suspected terror attack in Edmonton on Saturday night.

The incident took place in the vicinity of Commonwealth Stadium. An Edmonton police officer was stabbed and four others were injured in the attack.

It was announced Monday that the accused, Abdulahi Hasan Sharif, 30, has been charged with five counts of attempted murder, four counts of criminal flight causing bodily harm, as well as dangerous driving and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose charges.

In the wake of the incident, a news release has been issued by Saskatchewan RCMP. Their statement, in full, is as follows:

“As you know, on Saturday evening there were suspected terrorist attacks in Edmonton. Our sympathies go out to Edmonton Police Service and all those affected by this incident.

“When serious incidents occur, it is concerning to everyone, including those in neighbouring provinces. We want to assure the people of Saskatchewan that members of our RCMP National Security Enforcement Section are constantly assessing any potential threats in our province and we continue to work closely with our provincial policing partners.

“We are not aware of any specific threats locally to Saskatchewan and continue to exercise increased vigilance.

“Anyone with information about possible criminal threats to national security is encouraged to immediately call the RCMP’s National Security Information Network at 1-800-420-5805.”
