React and City look back on one year with curbside

Not everyone was happy with the curbside waste and recycling program when it came into Humboldt last summer.

But taking a look back at the last year of service, React CEO Wendy Yaworski says that people have been happy with the service overall and the amount of material being recycled has increased since the service has been put in place.

Generally, things have gone well in the last year, agress Humboldt City Manager Joe Day, with people accepting it as a modern form of garbage pick up.

“Most people are understanding it and complying with the expectations that we have.”

While there have been recent discussions around lid closure and warped lids, the city intends to work with React on any issues that arise to make sure the whole process works well, says Day.

While people like the convenience of the carts, there are still some challenges to work out with regard to proper usage of the carts, including placement of the carts and non-recyclable materials being placed in the green carts.

Besides educating the public on these issues, there is little that can be done to improve the service, says Yaworski.

Most people are placing their carts correctly, she says, but there still  are problems.

Proper placement of the carts is available in the brochures handed out by React, as well as proper material for the green carts.

Anyone that is having problems with their carts should contact React to have the cart replaced, says Yaworski.

Council has also asked the city to look into alternatives or systems that the city could introduce for a composting system, says Day.

“There’s still fine tuning that we can do. The one component that some communities have that we don’t is anything related to compost materials or compost pick up.”

Work on the new landfill continues and Day says that the city will work with React on ensuring that any waste reduction strategies will be put into effect.
