September is around the corner, and with school about to be back in session for another year, drivers are urged to obey the traffic laws in and around area schools.

In a news release North Battleford Municipal Enforcement, North Battleford Fire Department, RCMP, WPD Ambulance and the school divisions issued a reminder to drivers of the importance of observing school zones, students on roadways and school buses.

Students will be on foot, bicycle and bus. Drivers are especially urged to remember that students may, in their excitement in returning to school, not pay as much attention to traffic when on sidewalks, roadways and in crosswalks.

The speed limit is 30 km/h in school zones in North Battleford. It is an offence under the Traffic Safety Act, Section 200(2) when "exceeding the speed limit in a school zone". The base fine imposed is $140, but increases with speed, so a vehicle clocked at 50 km/h in a school zone would receive a $230 ticket.

Drivers are also urged to keep an eye out for school buses which again will be using the stop arm and lights that are mandatory for student safety. The offence in the Traffic Safety Act offence is s.212(2) "pass school bus that has its safety lights in operation," with a penalty of $360.
