The Rural Municipality of Connaught #457 has issued the following statement following the Humboldt Broncos’ bus crash:
The council and staff of the RM of Connaught wish to send their deepest condolences to the families affected by the tragedy that happened on Friday April 6, 2018.
Council and staff also wish to thank the first responders, passing motorists and rate payers who were at the scene of the accident, and encourage anyone who may be struggling with that experience to seek the support they need.
“We greatly appreciate everything everyone did to help on Friday night,” says Councillor Gary Jones. “I also understand as I was at the scene that we are all going to need help in order to get through this difficult time. Our office is open to anyone and everyone and we will have information on hand for support services that you can access.”
The RM has also been asked several times to comment on the intersection of highway 35 and 335, where the accident took place.
Council understands that although this intersection is within the rural municipality, it falls under the provincial Highways Ministry mandate. However, Council would like to see some changes take place.
“We feel adding rumble strips to the east and west sides of highway 335 and possibly speed limits to this intersection would make it safer for everyone traveling in this area,” says Councillor Dale Poggemiller.
Council would also ask that in the wake of this tragedy that the Ministry of Highways look at the safety of all intersecting highways in the province.
