RM OF NIPAWIN, CODETTE — Both the Rural Municipality of Nipawin and Village of Codette are seeking nominations from candidates to run for council.

The first call for candidates for the RM of Nipawin District 1 was first set for Aug. 11. After nobody applied, a second call was made. After applications remained untouched, council extended the deadline of the election for Dec. 15.

Nathalie Hipkins, administrator for the rural municipality and the village, confirmed that at least one candidate did put in their name on the ballot during this call, which closes on Nov. 10.

“I think people are so busy now and they feel it’s probably a lot of work to be on council,” Hipkins said. “You can put in as much time as you can, you can be on some many committees if you wish, but if you don’t have the time you don’t need to be on those committees.”

Hipkins said she believes the ideal candidate would be one who cares about the community and wants to see local growth.

The position for the RM of Nipawin was previously filled by Brandon Perkins, who left the role for personal reasons. As councillor for the RM of Nipawin, the candidate would be committing to attending compensated monthly council meetings which take up the majority of the work day.

The call for nominations for the rural municipality ends on Nov. 10, with the election set for Dec. 15.

The seat from the Village of Codette belonged to Cathy Barks, who moved out of the constituency area. As councilor for the village, the candidate would be committing to attending compensated monthly meetings which take up about two hours in the evening.

The call for nominations for the village ends on Oct. 27, with the election set for Dec. 1.

Nominations for either position may be delivered to the municipal offices at 529 Service Street, Codette, during normal business hours.

If only one candidate puts their name on the ballot, they will be acclaimed.
