The arrival of Col. Chris Hadfield in the Battlefords will have to wait until after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides.

To no one’s surprise, Rotary Club of the Battlefords has postponed its “Out of this World” Centennial Celebration events featuring Hadfield that were set for next month.

The events have been pushed back from its scheduled April 24 date and will be held instead on Oct. 9. All previous details about the event will remain the same, with the only change being the new date.

It is the latest in a long line of local cancellation and postponement announcements in the Battlefords since the pandemic was declared by the World Health Organization.

Original plans by Rotary had called for an afternoon event featuring Hadfield speaking to 1,000 high school students at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School with a gala event set for the Dekker Centre that night. In December Rotary reported the gala event has sold out.

“We wish to thank every one of our sponsors and partners for their continued support and pray for a speedy recovery from this unprecedented worldwide pandemic,” Rotary said in a statement.
