SASKATOON – Saskatchewan Liberal Leader Darrin Lamoureux today announced he is stepping down as leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party.
Lamoureux made the announcement to party members at the Saskatchewan Liberal Convention in Saskatoon.
“It has been an honour to serve as leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party for the last three years,” said Lamoureux. “While I remain supportive and positive about the long-term prospects of the Liberal brand in Saskatchewan, I feel that now is the appropriate time to step down to allow the renewal process that is under way to continue. This will also allow time for our members and new leader to prepare for the next general election.”
“I believe that by stepping down and having an open leadership contest, Liberal supporters will have the opportunity to be involved in a meaningful debate to define the party ahead of the 2020 election,” Lamoureux added.
The party will appoint an interim leader soon, and will begin preparations for a leadership convention to be held in 2018.
