Battleford town council has picked the location for the new seniors’ fitness park.

At their council meeting Monday, council agreed to a location in the grassy area just northeast of the Alex Dillabough Centre.

Council had to make a choice between that location and the Battleford West Properties area near Telegraph Heights Park. In the end the Alex Dillabough location won out. Administration recommended the location, citing its proximity to parking as well as the walking trail.

An RFP for the seniors’ park had already been awarded to Jeff Jackson at $119,995 plus GST, which is under budget.

That RFP was required to be completed by Aug. 15, but Parks and Recreation Manager Jordan Schechtel indicated that is likely to be pushed back to September , due to a fire at the suppliers’ manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania.

The Alex Dillabough location will allow seniors the opportunity to use exercise equipment and help them stay mobile. Councillor Judy Pruden said she agreed with the location, as it was next to the Alex Dillabough Centre for easy access to the walking trail.

Councillor Alexis Christensen also agreed, calling it a “central” location.

Mayor Ames Leslie said he was “totally” in favour. “We can promote exercise and recreation in our community — one of the biggest things people look for when they buy a home in your community is your recreational facilities.”

The vote to approve the location carried unanimously.
