Video submissions are now in for SGI’s Save a Life Challenge, and SGI is now seeking the public’s input in choosing a winner.

The contest’s video submissions have been posted on SGI’s Facebook page, and the top video picked by the public will receive a ‘people’s choice’ prize.

The public is being encouraged to go on Facebook and ‘like’ their favourite by Feb. 8.

Up to 10 additional prizes will also be awarded based on quality, creativity and the fit with the contest theme. Winning videos receive up to $10,000 in support of a community or traffic safety initiative in a First Nation community of the winner’s choosing, with winners announced March 1.

According to SGI’s news release, the contest is to raise awareness of road safety issues impacting First Nation communities in Saskatchewan. SGI notes the percentage of traffic-related injuries and fatalities related to impaired driving, speeding and unrestrained motorists are higher on First Nation roads.

Participants in the contest filmed and shared videos highlighting road safety issues on First Nation roads, including impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding and not wearing a seat belt.

“The majority of traffic-related injuries and fatalities are preventable,” said Shannon Ell, director of Traffic Safety Promotion at SGI, in a statement.

“By highlighting these issues and sharing the message of road safety, we can make our roads safer—not only for the communities involved in the challenge—but for the province as a whole.”
