Society often neglects to engage seniors in many activities, not intentionally but merely by oversight.

Single seniors are even more likely to be overlooked but a few Marcelin residents found a way to engage these individuals into a social atmosphere.

Hubert and Alice Smith along with Jean and Joe Lapierre and Maria DeGirolamo co-hosted a Marcelin Single Senior Barbecue at their farm Aug. 31 with 16 individuals in attendance. Everyone enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship and singing of some popular old-time favourites, accompanied by Maria on organ. Songs enjoyed included Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, Mansion over the Hilltop, Jesus Loves Me, The Old Rugged Cross and I Know Who Holds Tomorrow, to name a few.

The Smiths' farmyard was the ideal location to host the event as the evening sun shone on the field of golden wheat and the brilliant colours of flowers added contrast. Everyone gathered in the specially designed eating area constructed by the Smiths. The building had screened windows and a large wood-burning cooking area designed and built by Hubert.

The potluck supper saw a variety of vegetables and salads to complement the hamburgers and desserts, so very typical of an autumn supper in Saskatchewan.

The intent of the event was to reach out to seniors in Marcelin who live alone and to offer social interaction.
