Smoke from a train engine in the North Battleford rail yard caused concern for city residents Monday morning.

Residents noticed the smoky conditions both in the downtown core and even as far north as the North Battleford Comprehensive High School on Diefenbaker Drive.

North Battleford Fire and Emergency Services reports the smoke came from a rail engine that was emitting a large amount of diesel exhaust from the tracks just south of Railway Avenue.

The rail engine had emitted a large plume of exhaust that was clearly visible to those driving into the downtown core that morning. That exhaust blanketed a good portion of the south downtown.

The fumes made their way north to NBCHS. North Battleford Fire reported that they, along with bylaw enforcement, responded to a smoke report at the high school at around 9:53 a.m.

That incident was deemed to be a false alarm, as the smoke was attributed to the rail engine exhaust.
