Roadway crews have been removing snow from the City’s priority routes since the morning of Saturday, November 7th. Additionally, the roadway crews have been clearing snow from the main streets to the Civic Centre and its parking lots in preparation for the 2020 Municipal Election on Monday, November 9th.
Maintaining an efficient transportation network is always one of the top priorities during the winter months to ensure the safe and quick movement of both drivers and pedestrians along our streets. The City must prioritize snow clearing and sanding after a snowfall. The Department of City Operations begins by clearing the main arterials, emergency routes and access points to the City before moving on to secondary streets, such as 19th Avenue and 95th Street.
Sometimes, intersections are closed during snow removal and blockades are set up to prevent accidents. Drivers are to respect any closures and find alternate routes as it is not safe to pass plows, graders and sanding trucks. Drivers are reminded to reduce their driving speeds and to adjust to the winter driving conditions. These precautions will ensure the safety of drivers, pedestrians and City snow removal crews in these areas.
When it comes to pedestrian safety, residents and business owners are responsible for clearing all sidewalks adjacent to their property. In the downtown core, the City will clear sidewalks and driveway entrances if residents and business owners do not comply within 24 hours after a snowfall. Sidewalks must be cleared within 48 hours after a snowfall in areas outside of the downtown. If the City does the clearing, the property owner or business owner will be charged for the costs.
