Students in certain grades aren't meeting grade level when it comes to English Language Arts.
For comprehending and responding to reading materials, there are fewer Grade 1, 2, 3 and 5 students meeting grade level than expected. For composing and creating writing assignments, there are fewer Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 11 students meeting grade level than expected.
Luke Perkins, the North East School Divison's chair, said after the March 21 board meeting while that’s an area of concern, since they have the data now, they will gather the people in the know together and find a way to fix it. In previous years, the division would report on such data a year later.
“I never thought I’d find data exciting. It’s one thing collecting it, but now what do you do with it? Well, here’s what you do with it.”
Don Rempel, the divsion's director of education, said now that the division receives and reviews the data earlier, it can go down to the school level and hold interventions for individual kids, if that is what’s needed.
Pre-K achieving results
The division also learned that those children that were in pre-Kindergarten are achieving as well as those that haven’t. Those that are chosen to attend pre-Kindergarten in the division are those that are expected to have problems with their school careers due to their socio-economic position.
“It’s a good return on investment, if you think about it, because you’re putting a program in place for some students and it seems to be making a difference,” Rempel said.
