Sons of Norway Nisse Lodge have contributed to the Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation's newly formed Victor Pearsall Home Care Fund with a donation of $1,000.

Their contribution will go towards enriching the care provided to patients of Battlefords Region Home Care through the purchase of medical equipment and continued staff education.

"BUH Foundation is very grateful to receive this contribution from Sons of Norway - Nisse Lodge. The Sons of Norway was founded over 100 years ago wishing to protect men, women and children of Norwegian descent, both culturally and financially and this sentiment carries into their communities and local health care. We are pleased they chose to do that for home care," says Claudette McGuire, executive director, BUHF.

Sons of Norway Nisse Lodge is one of 12 lodges in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

"Every year we have a sports weekend that is hosted by a different lodge and this donation today is the result of our very successful sports weekend we hosted in February," explains David Ottas, lodge member.

"We're pleased to be able to contribute to local health care because of it. Thank you to everyone who participated in the event."

Home Care is a new area of funding for BUH Foundation, as the direction of acute and long-term care shifts. As patients are discharged from hospital sooner, follow-up care is provided in the comfort of their own home. As well, patients with heavier care needs can be supported to stay in their home for as long as possible, potentially delaying admission into a long-term care facility. In order to accommodate these changes, to meet patient needs safely, and to follow the desires of the patients, proper equipment and staff education is required.

"Thank you to Sons of Norway Nisse Lodge for their support of the home care program," says Colleen Toye, Home Care manager.

"With service provided to 875 people within Battlefords Region it is important we have the equipment and continued education to meet our needs, and their support will help make this possible."
