The City of Melfort will guarantee a $500,000 loan for the North East SPCA for their new animal shelter.
If all goes as planned, the city will not have to pay any of the money. If something happened to the SPCA, however, there is a risk the city would be stuck will the bill.
Coun. Doug Terry voted against the guarantee during the council meeting Dec. 12, as he was concerned doing so would begin a slippery slope where the city would be asked to contribute operating costs to the shelter. Coun. April Phillips responded by saying that operating costs would be something that will be negotiated with all Northeast communities, not just Melfort.
