Even if the weather did not cooperate, the Humboldt Big Brothers and Big Sisters (BBBS) Diva for a Day golf tournament still provided fun for the cowgirls of Humboldt.
In collaboration with the Humboldt and District Kinettes, the fourth annual event was clubhouse bound with the course too wet to golf.
Development Coordinator, Jodie Hergott with BBBS said that did not stop teams from winning prizes and taking part in some fun.
“They’re here to have fun and they’re not letting the weather spoil their spirits,” said Hergott on the day.
Seventeen teams, all of which dressed in cowboy themed apparel, had the opportunity to visit the vendors indoors to be pampered and do some shopping throughout the day, says Hergott.
Seventeen willing cowboys were up on the auction block to be bought for the day to be the teams’ caddies. One such cowboy, Kelly Bauer, brought in over $750 in pledges before bringing in another $300 on the auction block.
Bauer says BBBS is a good cause to support and as soon as Hergott gave the pledge sheets out, he went hard at it collecting donations, much to Hergott’s delight.
“We’re tickled by the fact that they stepped forward and brought us pledges,” says Hergott.
Rain did not stop the teams from competing in various games, including getting out onto the driving range for the Timbit Drive provided by Tim Hortons, as well as other games that vendors welcomed the ladies to participate in.
With all the team, caddie, and vendor support, Hergott says it is heartwarming how Humboldt has embraced the event.
“People just wanted to be a part of it.”
The need for mentors within the community is still high with 18 littles on the Humboldt BBBS waiting list, many of them young boys.
“We’re looking for that male component to step up and be a big brother. Of course we’re looking for big sisters too. There is very much still a need.”
