NIPAWIN — For the first time in several years, the Town of Nipawin is conducting a spring clean-up program, albeit with more limitations on what can be disposed of.
“We did do it for a number of years in the past, though it was a far broader reaching service,” said Barry Elliott, the town’s administrator, adding that these included couches, car parts and other refuse items.
“It became particularly problematic once the landfill came under the ownership of the regional waste authority, and the operating permit has certain demands out there. So it became difficult, we couldn’t go out there with massive loads and dump it at the site.”
As a result, the town ended their annual spring clean-up program.
This is until this year, when the town decided to reinstate the program following requests from the public.
“I know that council has been hearing from the public for some time and ask that it be brought back and revisited,” he said. “So the spring clean-up has come back with more defined and maybe tighter perimeters on it.”
Acceptable items this year include scrap lumber, household garbage, and tree limbs and trimmings up to a maximum of five feet lengths tied in bundles.
Unacceptable items include furniture, appliances, scrap tires, excessive amounts of building and renovation materials, as well as tree removal including stumps.
All items must be put in the back alley for pick-up by May 25 at 8:30 a.m. If a residence does not have a back alley, they are asked to place the items neatly at the curb on the side of the road.
Town crews will pick up throughout the rest of the week until all areas are completed.
All materials are asked to be separated for the crew to pick up, as they are required to be sorted at the landfill.
Crews will not enter private property to remove material and there will be no call-backs whatsoever.
Residents are encouraged to use the Compost Collection Program for items such as grass clippings, leaves and garden refuse.
Tree branches are not acceptable for compost and will not be collected.
Acceptable compost items should be placed in garbage cans, compostable paper bags or green MTN Carts and placed by the curb by 8:00 a.m. on Wednesdays.
