Blaine Lake Composite School SRC recently hosted a Rocks and Rings workshop at their school.
The unique indoor floor curling equipment is designed to provide a true curling experience without ice. The opportunity of bringing the curling rink to the school gym allows the sport to reach a diverse group of children who otherwise may not have access to the fun game.
The hard surface of the gymnasium floor is the ideal medium on which to play the game.
The SRC sent a letter of request for funding support to one of the local small business loan associations. Blaine Lake Economic Development Co-operative (BLEDCO) provided $200 towards the purchase of the equipment and the SRC covered the difference in cost.
The SRC initiative was to target the elementary students in hopes to raise awareness and interest in the sport, and to continue the legacy of curling that BLC is known for.
The wonderful thing about this indoor activity is it allows the students to develop and perfect their skills even before the ice is available at the curling rink.
Curling is a social sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime by all ages and abilities. Curling promotes flexibility, increases range of motion and circulation, and can be used as a rehabilitation tool for people with disabilities. Curling also promotes sportsmanship and camaraderie.
