She was discovered May 11, Minor Ball Day in Unity.
"Diamond Duck," as she was affectionately referred to, drew much curiosity after her emergency delivery under a picnic table at the busy ball diamonds.
At first she drew more attention than she desired and she did everything in her power to divert small children and curious onlookers. Soon people began posting pleas on Facebook, putting up temporary barriers and telling others to leave mamma duck to her nursery duties.
Many pondered the delivery date, even Googling duck egg gestation. But like many other baby arrivals, the little ones arrived when they were good and ready.
The Grade 6 class from St. Peter's had the science class to remember for a long time when they headed to the regional park to look for biotic and a-biotic things as part of their studies. They got a huge surprise when it was discovered the mamma duck had successfully hatched her eggs.
Students got a quick peak at the babies before their teacher encouraged them to move along so as not to scare momma duck away. Matthew Snell, Tyrell Kuhn and Tyson Krpan were part of that class and were happy to recount their tale of delivery day, along with showing me the nursery post delivery.
News of the delivery quickly spread as many breathed a sigh of relief at the safe arrival of - Pitcher, Catcher, First, Second, Third, Shortstop and Coach. Momma duck sent her starting line to the dugout.
