RCMP are reporting a sudden death investigation is under way involving RCMP at Witchekan Lake First Nation.
They report that around 12:30 pm on April 29, EMS and members from Spiritwood detachment responded to a complaint of a distraught adult male at a residence on the first nation. RCMP and EMS arrive to find the man suffering from injuries believed to be self-inflicted. Soon after, he was pronounced dead by EMS on the scene.
Due to the presence of RCMP on scene at the time of his death, the incident is now under review as per Part VII.1 of the RCMP Act, by a senior RCMP member from a separate district. The circumstances do not meet the threshold of requiring an outside agency. The RCMP has also requested an independent observer from the ministry of Justice to oversee the investigation to ensure transparency.
