Suessing it up

With a little help from Dr. Seuss, Reid-Thompson Public Library wrapped up their TD Summer Reading program on Aug. 18.

In true Dr. Seuss fashion, Rose Ward and the rest of the staff donned Cat in the Hat outfits and entertained the children with Green Eggs and Ham games and outdoor fun at  Civic Park. Indigo, the library’s summer intern debut the newest book in the Dr. Seuss collection, What Pet Should I Get.

The program started back in June and promoted literacy in the Humbold area. A hundred and nine children from ages 3-12 registered with the reading program and together read approxiamately 1780 books in the summer months, an increase from last year.

Family reading was also encouraged with prizes for not only the child who read the most but the family that read the most. The winning family read a total of 352 books from June to August, with the next family reading a total of 336.

Each week, the library put on fun and games for children to promote literacy.

As well as play safe courses, wacky storytime and craft days, the Saskatchewan Writer’s Guild brought in  a special day with singer /songwriter Brenda Baker on Aug 5.
Hergott Electric, the Humboldt Broncos and Universal Sports also sponsored the program.
