HUMBOLDT — A Humboldt summer tradition will not be going ahead for another summer.

Michael Ulriksen, the city’s community services director, said the city had to cancel the Summer Sizzler for 2021.

“We have no choice but to cancel,” he said. “We’ve been forced to pull the pin.”

West Coast Amusements, which provides the rides for the midway, has informed the city they aren’t traveling across the country due to uncertainty with the pandemic.

Ulriksen said a lack of clarity around gatherings has made it difficult to plan for a Summer Sizzler. While Step 1 of the province’s reopening plan would allow gatherings of 150 people outside, the director said there wasn’t yet enough information about the parameters that would have to be followed to accommodate those 150 people.

The Summer Sizzler isn’t the only fair cancelled this year. The Melfort Agriculture Society announced May 11 that it would be cancelling the Melfort Exhibition.

Ulriksen said the city will be receptive to other groups hosting events as rules around gatherings become more clear.

The city is planning another fireworks show on Canada like it did in 2021.

Ulriksen said planning is underway for a Summer Sizzler in 2022.

“We’re anxious to get back to this,” he said.
