The City of North Battleford is touting three projects underway as a result of its participation in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design methods training.
This training was completed by a number of City staff in 2015, as part of the Community Safety Program efforts. A CPTED Committee was ultimately formed in North Battleford, and training commenced early in 2016 with interested North Battleford citizens, North Battleford staff and persons from across Western Canada participating. As an offshoot of that training, the City has mentioned three projects have commenced.
One was a community cleanup of the alleyway extending from 20th Avenue to the park, which took place May 26.
City employees, local residents and the entire staff of Bralin Technology came to pick garbage for two hours. According to the City their efforts were rewarded with a clean alleyway and free ice cream from Krazzee Kones for all volunteers.
A second location identified by was the Civic Centre, which has been hit by vandalism and graffiti in recent years. A CPTED group toured the Civic Centre, and several recommendations were made to increase the overall safety there. Some recommendations being implemented right away are a new signage and branding strategy, as well as hiring a contractor to fence in the condenser and gas meter to curb access to the roof, where some incidents were happening.
The third project now underway is “Art Alley” – a collaborative CPTED project between the Business Improvement District, the City and local artists.
The project began on the wall of Moon’s Kitchen on 100th Street last week, with four local artists working on a joint mural over the summer months.
