Throwback: 1988 Sylvania Skate Carnival out of this world

From the Tisdale Recorder files, Feb. 24, 1988

On February 21 [1988] the Sylvania Figure Skating Club held their annual Ice Carnival to the theme 'Out of This World'.

The afternoon performance was dedicated to Aaron Scott, a four-year-old boy from Chagoness who had died on the previous Friday after a long bout with lung disease. The community of Sylvania through the United Church minister Rev. Gloria Fauser had taken a great interest in trying to help the young boy in any way they could. There were 31 skaters involved in the carnival, performing solo routines, duets and precision lines. A large crowd, that was termed one of the best ever took in the afternoon of entertainment.

It was the 20th anniversary for the Sylvania Figure Skating Club in their current rink. At the conclusion of the carnival two draws were made. Nancy and Carol Ratcliffe won the raffle for $100 and Karen Bowditch won the stuffed toy.

The Junior and Senior Queens were also chosen by their figure skating coaches. They were chosen on the basis of sportsmanship, cooperation and interest shown in skating over the season. Theresa Livingstone was crowned Junior Queen and Tracey Furber was chosen Senior Queen. Other senior skaters were considered Tracey’s princesses and each was presented with flowers by club pro Sheila Patterson.
