Special centennial parade designed to honor Canada on 100th birthday
To help celebrate Canada's Centennial Year the local centennial committee has been hard at work for weeks lining up what they hope will be the biggest parade Tisdale has ever seen. Their aim – 100 floats, one for each year of confederation.
The parade will take place Monday, July 10, [1967], the first day of the Kin Centennial Karnival.
The program committee has broken the 100 years down in ten year sections and these have been assigned as follows: 1867-1877 Knights of Columbus; 1877-1887 Indians; 1887-1897 Senior Citizens; 1897-1907 Scouts; 1907-1917 Town of Tisdale; 1917-1927 Royal Canadian Legion; 1927-1937 St. Therese Hospital; 1937-1947 Chamber of Commerce; 1947-1957 Tisdale Lions Club; 1957-1967 Tisdale Kinsmen Club; and 1967 itself, Students' Representative Council of TUCS [Tisdale Unit Composite School].
These ten year sections will be used as dividers. All other parade floats will be fitted in around them.
The parade will begin marshalling at Dag Hammarskjold School grounds at 11 a.m. and will move onto the parade route at 1:00.
Leading the parade will be a Legion and RCMP color party. This will be followed by a huge selection of floats, bands, vehicles from the Western Development Museum display which will be here for the Karnival, and marching groups.
The famed Swan River 50-piece marching band will be featured. They are being brought back because of popularity they gained the last time they were here. Also appearing will be two well-known Melfort bands, the Melfort Kinsmen Band and the Melfort Pipe Band.
Those wishing to enter floats in the parade have been assured by the committee there will be no charge, although several trophies will be offered. The parade route remains the same as in the past, with the floats, marchers and bands making a loop around to the hospital for the benefit of the patients and hospital staff.
The parade committee states that the parade is open to any horses or horse-drawn vehicles and asks that entries be made as early as possible.
Western Development Museum display here for Kin Karnival
The Centennial Travelling Exhibit provided by the Western Development Museum will be in Tisdale for the Kinsmen Centennial Carnival July 10 and 11. This has been announced by George O’Bertos, chairman of the Kinsmen Centennial Carnival committee.
The display is provided at no cost to the carnival through the co-operation of WDM and the Saskatchewan Centennial Corporation.
The exhibit will arrive in Tisdale loaded on two large trucks, according to a letter received by Mr. O’Bertos from Gordon A. Wilson, WDM manager. One of these trucks will carry a traction steamer and antique cars. The second will transport a display that will be accommodated in a 40x70-foot tent that will be erected on the carnival grounds.
The steamer and the antique cars will be a part of the large parade that is planned for Tisdale on July 10. An experienced, old time steam engine operator will accompany the steamer to Tisdale. University students make up the other personnel travelling with the display. All are well-trained in their duties. Mr. Wilson's letter advises.
Mr. O’Bertos expressed great pleasure with the acquisition of the travelling display for the Kin Karnival. In our Centennial year, when we are paying tribute to our nation's pioneers, it is most fitting that such a display is available. It will add much to the attraction of the carnival, said the chairman.
Centennial Karnival Queen contest – major award $2,000 lake cabin
No Kin Karnival would be complete without a queen... and one of the four young ladies shown above will be that queen. The winner will be decided on the vote system based on ticket sales on the $2,000 beach cabin being raffled at the Karnival.
Each ticket on the cabin is worth one vote for one of the girls. The candidates and their sponsoring organizations are now selling tickets throughout the area. Those wishing tickets should make a point of getting them now as time is running out.
The beach cabin is completely built and is painted. It can be seen across from the post office in Tisdale.
Winners of the queen contest as well as the winner of the cabin will be announced Tuesday night, July 11.
The Karnival Queen will receive $100 in cash, while the runners-up will be presented with engraved wrist watches.
Biggest midway ever offered to be featured at Kin Karnival here
Tisdale Kinsmen's Centennial Karnival, slated for July 10 and 11, moves into the major fair bracket this year with the biggest midway ever to appear here, state Karnival officials. West Coast United Shows will bring in a total of 17 rides in addition to sideshows, booths and bingo.
Included in the rides will be twin Ferris wheels, a roll-a-plane, last year's popular paratrooper, a giant merry-go-round, a children's merry-go-round, and a helicopter ride.
This acquisition of the full-size midway is a giant step forward in providing Tisdale and district with a full-scale fair.
