With the Buy Low grocery store, Tim Hortons and the Sobeys liquor store coming to town, there’s a need to fill 120 to 140 new jobs, both part-time and full-time.
That’s why there will be two job fairs over the coming months.
Buy Low Foods will host the first one, Sept. 27-28, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the RECplex atrium. The town will then host a larger one at the same location Nov. 1 from 12 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. that will include Buy Low, Tim Hortons, Sobeys, RCMP, Canadian Armed Forces, RBC and Cumberland College.
“We’ve been working on a concept of a job fair probably for the last three months and it’s just coming to a head now,” said Sean Wallace, the town’s economic development officer. “As economic development director, part of my job is to make sure that when we bring new investment to Tisdale that we do our best to ensure they have the employees to fill those positions.”
The economic development officer said job fairs provide a large group for employers to fill a large amount of positions while being quick and convenient for job seekers and the employer.
Those seeking a job at one of the fairs should bring an updated resume, that has work experience and volunteer work.
“Be prepared for a short interview on site,” Wallace said. “Sometimes what will happen is if you give your resume in, they may be looking to identify potential employees right away, so an interview could ensue.”
Local businesses that are looking to fill positions can also participate in the town’s job fair. Those that are interested should contact Wallace at the town office.
The economic development officer said that when the town was working on creating its new brand, it had a survey. The first concern among Tisdale citizens was providing opportunity for youth, while the third was providing opportunity for seniors. Wallace said the new jobs provide opportunities for both groups.
