TISDALE — After six and a half years as principal of Tisdale Middle & Secondary School, Randy Kerr is taking on a new role.

He starts as the co-ordinator of integrated services for the North East School Division on Jan. 30.

Kerr said he’s looking forward to the opportunity, which is based out of Melfort.

“I will get the opportunity to look at education from a scope that’s broader than just a school,  as a system,” he said. “In that regard it’s something new, it’s a challenge. I’m scared to death for it, which as a token is also a good thing because it indicates I’m growing.”

For this job he will be working out of Melfort.

Terry Andrusiak, a vice-principal, will be the acting principal until June. The division has a job notice out to hire a new permanent principal.

Kerr has two main reasons for the job change. For one, he wants a new challenge.

“I like to have something new all the time. If you’re not a little uncomfortable and you’re not challenged, you’re not growing. In this regard I will definitely be growing, because it is challenging.”

Kerr also wants to see TMSS advance under new leadership.

“I’ve always felt leadership in schools should change every five to seven years,” he said.

Kerr believes the new principal will bring a perspective he couldn’t have done, and add to the things he has worked on as principal.

“It really is a win-win for myself and for the school,” Kerr said. “When I came to this position there were things that were happening in the school that I felt could be improved upon or maybe we could do things a little bit differently, operate more effectively. Somebody is going to come in behind me and do the exact same thing and ultimately that’s in the best interest of students.”

As principal, Kerr said he worked to create a culture of growth as well as instilling for the students he importance of being resilient, togetherness and conducting themselves with integrity.

“From an academic perspective I’m really proud of our staff. they go to the ends of the earth to support our students to make sure they’re achieving the optimal level. They’re incredibly responsive in their instruction, very proud of our partnership with Kinistin Saulteaux Nation as well. I can speak forever, there are parts where I reflect. You can never do a perfect job, but there are lots of positives.”

Kerr first began his teaching career at TMSS.

“I interned in this building the day it opened,” Kerr said. “I was fortunate to get a teaching position here the next year, then I had a bit of a five-year hiatus, taking on admin positions in the divisions, but my ultimate dream job has always been the principal of the Tisdale Middle & Secondary School.”

In that regard, moving on is somewhat bittersweet for Kerr.

“People who know me know how much this school means to me. As far as schools go Tisdale Middle & Secondary School will always have a special place in my heart,” Kerr said, adding it’s been a privilege and pleasure to work with parents, students and the community. “I am forever grateful for the experience.”
