Battleford town council is not going ahead with plans for a culvert that would have allowed people to walk underneath highway 4 from Fort Battleford to the Government House area.

The town had previously approved the idea for a 2700 mm diameter steel pipe culvert, but a number of issues came up with respect to making the culvert match with the trails to Government House and to Fort Battleford.

A main problem was the location of the culvert, with people having to take a detour several yards down to the culvert and then detour back again to get back onto the trail to Government House.

Coun. Derek Mahon said at the meeting that he agreed with coun. Garth Walls' view that most people would simply find a way to go across the highway instead.

Cost was also a concern. "This is quite a bit of money for a structure that isn't in the right place," said Mahon.

The town plans to look at alternatives instead, though nothing was decided Monday.

A motion to accept the change order with contractor G&C Asphalt to remove the $73,920 cost of the culvert was accepted and passed by council.

The revised contract price is now reduced to $7,652,034.70 for the highway 4 twinning project.
