The Town of Battleford has voted to purchase the old Battleford Curling Club building.

The town council voted unanimously in favour of a resolution authorizing the mayor and administration to sign an offer to purchase with Battleford Co-operative Curling Club in the amount of $92,500. The purchase should close later this month.

Mayor Chris Odishaw explained that the decision to purchase was made because the property fits in with the other town-owned recreational properties in the vicinity, such as the Alex Dillabough Centre and Battleford Arena, and with any expansion plans they would have.

Another factor in the decision was an opportunity to further assist the local curlers who are moving this fall into the new Northland Power Curling Centre, which opens in a few weeks. Members of the former Battleford and Granite curling clubs have formed the Twin Rivers Curling Club that will be based at the new facility.

Odishaw notes no decision has been made on what they will do with the curling rink. It is not likely to be converted into a hockey arena due to the low roof, but there is a possibility it could be used for public skating or other events.
