The RCMP's Traffic Services were out in full force over the Thanksgiving long weekend, focusing on some of the leading causes of highway fatalities - distracted driving, seatbelts and impaired driving.

Members also looked to increase awareness of specific risky behaviour, like speeding through construction zones.

RCMP officers aimed for the highest level of visibility, and made a noticeable difference in highway safety. Over five years, the average number of fatalities over Thanksgiving Weekend is three. This year, the RCMP reported only one fatality.

The blitz resulted in a total of 858 charges. Eleven per cent were written for speeding in a construction zone, 191 drivers were charged for not wearing a seatbelt, 202 were charged for speeding, 60 drivers were charged for driving without due care and two drivers were given 30 day suspensions.

Only a few received citations for more serious offences. Only one driver was charged with impaired driving and five people were charged with drug offences under the CDSA. The South East Regional Traffic Services also managed to clear four outstanding warrants.

The RCMP say they thank all motorists who complied with all provincial and federal statutes throughout the weekend across the province of Saskatchewan. All motorists are reminded that enforcement will continue throughout the fall and winter months with a goal of safe highways.
