With adversity comes opportunity for new things.
That is how the Humboldt Big Brothers Big Sisters Purse Auction came to be, says Development Coordinator, Stacey Poss.
“Because of the environment, some of our funding has been cut back so we’ve had to be creative and look for new ways to raise funds and also give back to the community.”
Bidding opened up on Dec. 14 and will go until Nov. 27 at 9 p.m. Winning bids will be confirmed on Nov. 28.
Donations are still coming in and the fundraiser now has 158 purses, laptop bags, luggage pieces, and wallets available to be bid on on the Big Brothers Big Sisters Purse Auction Facebook group.
Poss says they are having lots of fun with this first time fundraiser and they already have plans to make it better for next year.
“We see this event, we’re going to try again next year and it’ll just get bigger. More ladies will know about it.”
All non-profit programs suffer from a lack of funding and grants. That just helps the organization become more creative, says Poss.
Creative fundraisers, especially Bowl for Kids Sake and Walk a Mile in Her Shoes that is put on by PARTNERS Family Services really work that much harder for the community to come together and have fun for a good cause.
Successful fundraisers also take pressure off the need for organizations to seek government grants and funding, says Poss, as well as provide much needed social programming.
“The services we provide are definitely an asset and needed in the community but on top of that it’s the events, the feeling of making a difference in the community that we also provide.”
The Humboldt Big Brothers Big Sisters will not be receiving as many grants that they have in previous years and they are not the only ones within the non-profit sector.
However, this is a time where new things come to fruition, says Poss.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is always looking for new bigs, littles, and volunteers.
