Mayor Ian Hamilton, Doug Fehr and Gail Sack were on hand Thursday for the presentation of a cheque for $150,000 from the Granite Curling Club towards the Northland Power Curling Centre as part of the "Raise the Roof" fundraising effort. It marks the second installment of their $500,000 commitment to the project, which just achieved substantial completion. It was also announced Thursday that the name of the curling club is the Twin Rivers Curling Club, selected following a name-the-club contest this summer.

The new name of the newly-merged Curling club in the Battlefords is the Twin Rivers Curling Club.

That was the name selected following the name-the-club contest that took place this year. It was announced at the just-completed Northland Power Curling Centre on Thursday by Gail Sack, chair of the founding board of the curling club.

"We had participants submit several names for us," Sack said. The board went through the submissions and "picked the one that represents our community the best,"

The winner that submitted that name is Kristi Frolek, who will be honored with a plaque at the new curling club for naming the curling club.

Frolek, herself an avid curler, came up with a name "that would involve both the communities, Battleford and North Battleford," said Frolek. There were two rivers, she said, so that's where the name came from.

The new general manager of the curling club was also announced Thursday, as Kathy McNinch takes on that role. McNinch, who started in mid-July, said it is an exciting time.

"It's an inclusive name, having Twin Rivers, and it's a brand new entity, so it'll be a good start for being in this new building," said McNinch.

Some further announcements are planned for the next few weeks, with Oct. 27 the tentative date for the grand opening.

The Twin Rivers Curling Club was formed this year to replace the former Granite and Battleford curling clubs that disbanded with the departure from their former facility in Battleford.

Also part of the presentation Thursday was presentation of a fundraising cheque of $150,000 to the new Northland Power Curling Centre from the Granite Curling Club.

This is the second installment of their $500,000 commitment towards the construction. An earlier cheque had been presented for $100,000 in April, and the final $250,000 is expected to be presented April 1 to finish off the commitment.

Granite director Doug Fehr said the fundraising came about as the result of several different events over the years, including from the mens' and womens' provincial championships held in North Battleford in recent years. Various civic centre concessions and bingos have helped raise the money as well.
