Unlike most of the doctors in the Northeast, Melfort doctors are paid through a fee-for-service model as opposed to a salary. That means the Melfort physician group has a say in how many doctors are recruited, to ensure that there’s enough demand for their services to sustain their practices.

“We had one physician that left and so we were recruiting and then we had more interest then we needed,” said Jessica Kwochka, the Kelsey Trail Health Region’s recruitment co-ordinator, “but we spoke with the existing physician group and they say they would like us to recruit the other ones as well.”

The health region is currently recruiting doctors for Tisdale, Nipawin, Kelvington and Porcupine Plain.
