The Battlefords United Way are looking back on a strong 2011 campaign and looking forward to what 2012 will bring.

They gathered at their annual meeting April 19 at Chapel Gallery to look back on the campaign that was and celebrate their accomplishments.

United Way Executive Director Mira Laprell-Elliott reported they had a great campaign last year with a total of $210,000 raised.

The business campaign was also strong last year with a total of $56,721.18 raised, according to business campaign chair Matt Pruden.

Although the revenue was not quite what was targeted, chair Melanie Boyd stated at the annual meeting it was still a good year for the United Way overall. Soon, the allocations committee will be releasing the funding allocations for this year.

Gratitude went out to the allocations committee members including Walter Houk, Heath Gabruch, Monte Migneault, Brendon Boothman and past Executive Director Jane Zeilke for all of their hard work last year. A total of $109,000.00 was allocated last year plus $10,000 for special project applications and they say they have begun the process for this year already.

Now the focus is on 2012 and on the campaign to come. Melanie Boyd has stepped down as chair of the Battlefords United Way and Monte Migneault now takes over that role.

In her executive director's report, Laprell-Elliott cited the slogan for the campaign to come. "I believe the new slogan for the United Way, 'Change Starts Here,' is powerful," she stated.

"Communities working together are powerful. Together, with whatever you can give - time, money, support, volunteerism - we can achieve balance, increase awareness where it is needed in community. It is important to also celebrate our successes.

"A big part of our success is due in fact to the many volunteers that work hours to fundraise, help us with our special events, come to share work at our many booths and more. You are always there when we need you. A big thank you goes out to you."

A highlight at this year's annual meeting was an award given out to one of the United Way's staunch supporters. '

Heath Gabruch, a long time volunteer of the Battlefords United Way, was given the Recognition of Support Award handed out at the event.

Gabruch has spent many years volunteering to the organization, including work with their Allocations Committee. He was presented the award by incoming chair Monte Migneault.

Good attendance was reported at the annual meeting. Those in attendance included Battleford mayor Chris Odishaw and North Battleford mayor Ian Hamilton.
