Two teams are locked in a battle for first at the end of Day 3 of the 2018 Viterra Scotties Women’s Provincials.

Both Team Silvernagle and Team Eberle have won five games and lost one. Both teams also won the two games they played on Day 3.

“We just wanted to come into the day and have two great games and we came out with two wins, so you can’t ask for anything more than that, so we’re feeling good today, that’s for sure,” said Kara Thevenot, Silvernagle’s lead.

In the last draw of the day, Draw 7, Silvernagle faced Martin and won that game 6-3. While Silvernagle got ahead early, Martin managed to get rocks into the button and some guards up towards the end of the game, which could have threatened Silvernagle if they didn’t manage to clear the rocks away.

“We were ahead the whole game after a couple of steals, so it was just keeping the defense on with that lead. Definitely playing a lot of peels and just making sure, with hammer, that we always had a shot to the four foot to score,” Thevenot said. “That’s one thing our team is good at, playing the defense and being able to play the big weights.”

For Eberle, the last game against Chisholm was tight, with Eberle winning 6-5 with the very last rock during an extra end.

Christie Gamble, Eberle’s third, said they’ve played close games with Chisholm where they’ve won with the last rock before.

“Overall, it was just a back and forth game, then in the end we had to persevere and use our mental toughness to just stick it out to the end,” she said. “We weren’t expecting to get into an extra end the way we did, so to be able to bounce back from that and make that last shot in the extra was great.”

She added that final shot made by Chantelle Eberle wasn’t an easy one to make either.

For Day 4, both teams are hoping to win the final two games. If both teams do so, they’ll have to play a tiebreaker to determine their position in the finals.

Gamble said the field at the provincials was extremely even.

“I don’t think you’ll ever find a provincial that has the same parity as this particular event does, so for us to be at the top of the leaderboard right now is really great just because we’re playing against eight equally solid teams,” she said. “It’s really just a matter of being the team that comes out sharpest this week.”
