Pearl Hawkins of Meota was honoured at the Rivers West District for Sport, Culture and Recreation awards night April 9 in Radisson.

There were 14 categories and Meota nominated Hawkins as their volunteer of the year and she received her award as Professional of the Year in appreciation of the many activities she heads or works with, in the community.

Hawkins sat on village council for six years, and belongs to the Meota Lakeshore Lions, Meota ADRA and the Meota Community Complex Management Board. She has been tireless in fundraising efforts for the community hall - organizing monthly hall lunches, a spring supper, bingo and a turkey and ham bingo, annually. Hawkins caters, or directs her helpers, any time it's needed, at the hall.

The residents of the community are lucky to have a volunteer like Pearl in their midst and they appreciate everything she's done for them.

Hawkins had good support from her community, as she was accompanied to the banquet by her husband Arie, Lawrie and Shirley Ward, Virgil and Vera Trytten, John and Linda Macdonald, Doug and Lexie Lessard, Gilles and Eileen Bru and Dave and Jacquie Code from Meota, as well as her sister Vivian and her husband Dennis Skuce from Saskatoon.

Hawkins has been heard to say on more than one occasion,"Nursing is my profession, sewing is my God-given gift and cooking is my passion".

The Radisson banquet was catered to by their playground/recreational committee, which set out a delicious roast beef supper that everyone enjoyed.
